6. Explosive Finale – Fight Club
The scene:
After learning that Tyler Durden, the cult leader and antagonist of the film, only existed in his own mind, the unnamed protagonist shoots himself in the face, “killing” him. He turns to his love interest, the long-suffering Marla, and says: “trust me, everything’s going to be fine“. They watch as Durden’s plan comes off around them, with bombs levelling the city’s skyline as the pair begin to hold hands.
The song: “Where Is My Mind?” by Pixies
Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” kicks in just as the bombs begin to detonate. The song’s hauntingly simple guitar riff and howling vocals ring out, matching up perfectly with the first explosion. What’s more, the lyrics perfectly reflect the protagonist’s delicate mental state, serving as the perfect way to close out the film.
