3. The Last Stand – Shaun Of The Dead
The scene:
After successfully holing up in their local pub, Shaun and his friends find themselves surrounded by hungry zombies. Faced with the realization that his mother has been bitten, a distraught Shaun is forced into action as the zombie horde breaks into the pub. Brandishing pool cues, they begin to fight for their lives against the ranks of the undead.
The song: “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen
Just as the zombies break through, the pub’s jukebox begins to play Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”. It’s played for laughs, with characters desperately trying to stop the music, even as Shaun as his closest friends begin beating the zombies to its rhythm. It’s a wonderfully choreographed scene that breaks up the film’s most emotional moment, with the use of the song proving just why Shaun of the Dead is not just one of the best horror movies of the ’00s, but also an unforgettably funny comedy.
