5. Candyland Shootout – Django Unchained
The scene:
After Django and Schultz’s plan to rescue and free Django’s wife is discovered by Calvin Candie, Schultz impulsively shoots and kills the plantation owner. He himself is then killed, forcing Django into action. The two deaths mark the beginning of one of the biggest and bloodiest Western shootouts of all time.
The song: “Unchained” by 2Pac & James Brown
As the on-screen deaths continue to mount up, “Unchained” begins to play. A mix of 2Pac’s vocals from his posthumous hit “Untouchable” and James Brown’s “The Payback”, “Unchained” is a perfect fit for the scene. Not only is it in-keeping with Django Unchained‘s celebration of Black culture and history, but it perfectly captures the high-octane Western action of the shootout.
