7. Wing Commander (1999)

Loosely based on the video game series of the same name, 1999’s Wing Commander was a disaster. Starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard (pre-Scooby-Doo), the sci-fi film was an attempt to adapt the popular ’90s space combat simulation games to the screen. But, with a score of just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, Wing Commander wasn’t exactly a hit.

To be fair, the Wing Commander games weren’t exactly screaming for the blockbuster treatment. Space simulation isn’t exactly the most story-heavy genre of games, so creative license was needed to adapt Wing Commander to the big screen. According to Prinze, the initial script was pretty good, but a late-stage rewrite saw things take a turn for the worse.

Ultimately, the Wing Commander movie was a horrific disappointment. Despite featuring two of the ’90s hottest stars, it failed to impress: cheesy dialogue and tacky special effects wasted any potential that the film may have had. As a result, Wing Commander went down in history as one of the worst video game movies ever made.
