5. Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)

The Silent Hill video games are some of the industry’s most atmospheric titles. It makes sense, then, that Hollywood would want to adapt their symbolic horror to the big screen. Unfortunately, their attempts to do so have been… unsuccessful. After a weak first attempt, Silent Hill: Revelation was made, and it holds a score of just 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel features a host of respectable actors. Kit Harrington, Deborah Karen Unger, Sean Bean, Malcolm McDowell, and Carrie-Anne Moss all feature, but the film’s star power isn’t indicative of its quality. No, Silent Hill: Revelation is among the worst video game movies of all time not just because it’s awful (it really is, though), but also because it so thoroughly wastes the potential of its source material.
Taking the games’ cryptic storylines and fumbling their symbolism, Silent Hill: Revelation simply comes off as a confusing mess. Its characters are pitiable in all the worst ways, and it plays out as though its script was missing several pages. It’s borderline incomprehensible, and it not only fails to appropriately scare its audience, but to elicit any emotion other than vague irritation and boredom.
