You know him as Phil Dunphy. We know him as Phil Dunphy. The whole world knows him as Phil Dunphy, Modern Family patriarch and master of the wholesome dad joke.
Shortly before he became synonymous with the suburban sitcom dad, actor Ty Burrell also happened to feature in a major MCU movie. In The Incredible Hulk, Burrell plays Leonard Samson, Bruce Banner’s rival for Betty Ross’s affection. Samson is designed to be the level-headed foil to Banner’s Hulk-ish ways, and Burrell was the perfect choice for the role.
Though he has been cast in a number of minor movie roles, Burrell is primarily considered among TV actors. Thanks to his excellent turn as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, Ty Burrell will probably always be dad material rather than a superhero’s love rival. Still, Phil Dunphy squaring off with the Hulk? That we’d love to see.
