5. Hawkman & Hawkgirl
There are many DC heroes with tragic and compelling backstories, and many have already made it onto the big screen. Two heroes yet to receive the movie treatment are actually intrinsically linked (which is why they only get one entry): Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Those familiar with their story will already agree it would make an incredible movie – or, like us, be baffled that it hasn’t already been adapted.
The two heroes are partners and romantic interests (implied by the perpetual use of one of the greatest couples’ costume in comic book history). Though their story has gone through many revisions, the simple version is that they are both endlessly reincarnated and killed, only to find each other in every new life. Pretty tragic, right?
Though Hawkman was featured in Black Adam and Hawkgirl is set to appear in Superman: Legacy, the pair’s story itself has yet to be fully adapted. The romantic side of the heroes’ origins would set their movie apart from other superhero cinema, and also comes with endless potential for future movies (and tragedies). Seeing Hawkman and Hawkgirl finally done justice on the big screen simply can’t come soon enough.
